Cross-Culture Warrior

Description

Ah, school's finally done for the semester! I can sleep now... Anyway, I'll be posting a couple assignments . . . This particular project was to depict a culture of choice with figures, and an option was to "cross-pollinate" cultures.

So, this character is a combination of African and Greco-Roman culture with regards to costume and artefact. My inspiration originally came from the Zulu tribe - research revealed that Chief Shaka developed the use of a shield among his warriors, and that was likened to the strategies of a Roman legion. I decided to focus my references on the Masai tribe of Africa, and Greek hoplites. My intentions were to combine the structure and form of Greek garb with the materials, patterns, and colour palette of the Masai.

I incorporated the Masai's lion mane head-dress into the structure of a plumed Greek helmet, and maintained the tribe's iconic red cloth. Also, Masai warriors put on red ochre paint, often framing the face, and I shaped the edges of the paint to be reminiscent of the frontal plates of a helmet. The shield is in the shape of a Greek's, but with the triangle pattern of the Masai. I did not decide to give my character a heavier set of armour, as I imagine he lives in an African climate.

Ugh, did this all in one night... If I gave myself more time I would like to have added a lot more detail with markings and bead-work, along with a clearer sense of environment. Spent too much time over-rendering the figure... Proportions are a bit off, and the pose is admittedly awkward, but I'm actually quite happy with the overall impression! ^__^

fine combo of two warrior cultures........ roman legions used the local warriors for scouting, and learning to adopt to the conditions, and traditions......... Gaul scouts, and cavalry aided Caesar in his victories as he adapted, and learned how the local tribes fought, and the details of past legendary victories.......fine shield and headdress.... thanks
